My goal for 2018 is to learn WordPress. I have to admit when I fist heard of WordPress I kind of looked down on it. I wasn’t the best dev, I surely didn’t consider myself a dev. That said a WordPress developer sounded like an oxymoron. Those people used software to build websites. The only software I needed was PHP Storm. It was only later when people on Experts Exchange recommended WordPress for some of my projects that I decided to check it out.

As you can probably tell, I’m not very fluent in WordPress. This site uses a free theme. Customization is minimal. When I purchased this domain I was going to simply have a static HTML page with my resume on it. When I started playing around with WordPress I saw how it could be useful for some things. I learned how to install it from the GNU/Linux command line and started playing around with it.

I want to start a web dev hosting company to pay the rent in College. WordPress is a great tool to use for clients. To begin with, you can create something of value for a low cost in time which results in a low cost in money. You can use a theme and customize it. If the client wants a custom theme it allows you to do that too. Best of all, clients can customize their websites without having to call me.

Another project I am considering is starting an e-commerce store to sell vapes and vape juices. I’ve been able to quit smoking using a Kangertech Top Box Mini. So with that goal I kind of narrowed it down between Woocommerce and Magento. I tried to install Magento last night but I couldn’t even get it working. I’m pretty fluent with Linux concepts but it requires some pretty advanced configuration. Using Woocommerce allows me to see if I can make money without investing an inordinate amount of time. It’s also WordPress, which I need to know for clients.

We’ll see how this year goes.
